Seventh-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu avoided an upset by drilling Algerian lucky-loser Lamine Ouahab 6-3, 6-2.
In other matches involving Germans, Denis Gremelmayr beat Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello 5-1, wild card Daniel Brands doused Austrian Stefan Koubek 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) and wild card Andreas Beck leveled countryman Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-4. Vassallo Arguello succumbed to a lower back injury in the first set against Gremelmayr.
Additional opening-round wins came for Frenchman Julien Benneteau and Italian Simone Bolelli, who overcame Swiss lucky-loser Stephane Bohli 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Bolelli was last year's Munich runner-up to Chilean slugger Fernando Gonzalez.
