Kirilenko sneaks into second round in Estoril

05/05/2009 - Estoril, Portugal (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Reigning champion Maria Kirilenko highlighted Tuesday's first-round winners at the $220,000 Estoril Open.

The second-seeded Kirilenko came from behind to beat Canadian qualifier Sharon Fichman 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-3 on the red clay at National Stadium. Kirilenko defeated Czech Iveta Benesova in last year's finale here.

Kirilenko's second-round opponent will be Argentine Maria Emilia Salerni.

Third-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea held off Japanese Kimiko Date Krumm 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, while fifth-seeded German Sabine Lisicki leveled Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-2, 6-2 and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer upended fifth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-4.

In other action involving seeds, No. 6 Russian Ekaterina Makarova handled Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-4, 6-3 and No. 7 Israeli overcame Portuguese lucky- loser Michelle Larcher de Brito 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Makarova was last week's runner-up in Fes, Morocco.

Additional Day-2 wins came for Czech Barbora Zahlavova, Estonian Maret Ani, Belarusian Olga Govortsova, Hungarian Melinda Czink, the aforementioned Salerni and Russian qualifier Elena Bovina.

The 2009 Estoril champ will collect $37,000.
